The crisis of the Civil War pushed the Bolsheviks towards a drastic economic policy which included the rapid nationalization of all industry and the requisitioning of all surplus grain from the peasants. It succeeded in meeting the immediate needs of the Communist state, but it created deep resentment in both the proletariat and the peasantry which eventually escalated into outright rebellion.
